Kreis Saatzig

Kreis History

• Became a Kreis in 1818, and was part of the administrative district of Stettin until 1945.
• The eastern part was added in 1815 from the Kreis Arnswalde.
• Kreis Saatzig bears the name of an old fortress, of which only a ruin now remains.
• Under German control, the city of Stargard had been the administrative and ruling center of the region  although the city was geographically in the extreme southwestern portion of the Kreis.
• The rural district, in the west and south, bordered the Ihna River.
• Near Stargard, the Krampel River from the north, and the "Stolen Ihna" River unit to form the border river, Grenzfluß.
• The site of the Pansin Castle, the oldest night's fortress of Pomerania, was located on a peninsula between the confluence of flowage from the Krampel River and the "Stolen Ihna" River.
• Kleist Mountain is on the northern border.
• The Kreis produced potatoes, beets, rye, barley, and oats. There was also pasture for cattle, sheep, and pigs. 
• Near the center of the Kreis, near the Saatziger Lake and the Saatzig Fortress, lay the ruins of the city of Jacobshagen. The city burned completely in 1781 and was rebuilt by Fredrick the Great.
• Northwest of Jacobshagen, the city of Freienwalde, is laid out on the shore of Great Staritz Lake.
• Frienwalde obtained a civil government as early as 1338.
• Northeast of Jacobshagen, is the town of Nörenberg, located on Enzig Lake, and which served as a holiday resort.
• In the south was the small town of Zachan, where the estate of the Nights of the Order of st. John was established by the 14th century. 
• East of Zachan are the small villages of Falkenwalde (today Sokoliniec), Ravenstein (today Wapnica), and Altenwedel (today Sicko).
